MTN Rwanda Explains Causes Of Its Current Internet

CEO MTN Rwanda: Khaled Mikkawi

In an era where MTN Rwanda has provided full countrywide Internet coverage through their GPRS, EDGE and 3G networks, any slight, miniature Internet problem will cause public outcry. For the past few days, MTN internet subscribers have been complaining of slow, on & off internet connection.

In a statement made by the telecommunication company’s CEO Khaled Mikkawi on 21st February 2012, said that due to EASSy (East Africa Submarine Cable System) cable disruptions, the company is unable to provide full capacity internet connection as usual. The EASSy cable which is responsible for MTN Rwanda’s 80% Internet provision is said to have had disruptions along the Djibouti-Sudan port.

Coincidentally this cable cut has come at a time when MTN’s Internet was also being slowed down due to upgrading its 2G networks to 3G. This upgrading move is meant to comply with the International Mobile Telecommunication Standards (IMT 2000 Standards) and a need to provide faster and large internet bandwidth.

According to MTN Chief Marketing Yvonne Manzi Makolo, in a bid to resolve the internet shortage problem, MTN Rwanda is currently utilizing MTN Uganda’s Internet cable connections meanwhile as their sub-contractor responsible for the EASSy Cable has sent a vessel into the sea, to rectify the major problem.

Public outcry is not only by MTN’s subscribers but also by Rwanda Utility Regulatory Agency (RURA). RURA’s Director Regis Gatarayiha told the New Times that they are investigating the issue and the magnitude of inconveniences caused so as to devise a way forward.

This is not the first time RURA could be seen taking such a decision to protect consumers since there are previous cases like Rwandatel’s license which was cancelled due to a failure to meet contractual obligations and MTN Rwanda which was fined 70 Million Rwfs in 2007 due to a number of dropped calls.
