Tigo Rwanda has successfully hit a 50% percent mark in registering clients’ SIM cards, just two month after the exercise was launched in Rwanda.

In February this year, telecoms regulator- RURA and the National ID Project (NID), Tigo Rwanda formally presented its SIM Card Registration project – a project initiated by the Government of Rwanda to keep mobile phone users in Rwanda free from crimes on mobile phones or theft

According to Tigo officials the exercise is on track to keep all its mobile subscribers protected. “We are delighted to participate in initiatives such as this that keep Tigo customers protected and that enable us to offer a more personalized services to each customer” says Diego Camberos, the CEO of Tigo Rwanda.

Every mobile phone user  is required to register their simcards with the three major communication companies in Rwanda ahead of the six months registration period whose deadline which is due to end on July 31st 2013.

A customer is only requested to present an original national ID or Passport to an agent from any of the telecom companies (Tigo, MTN and Airtel). A new customer can have their SIM Cards registered on purchase while the old users can register their simcards at any point of service.

This simcard registration exercise in Rwanda comes at a time when most East African countries like Kenya and Uganda have also adapted the same process. The program is aimed curbing down on crimes committed through use of telecommunications, according to officials of the Rwanda Utility Regulatory Authority (RURA).

The Police Investigation Unit says that over Rwf1billions was stolen from various individuals through phone and communication related crimes in 2012.  The exercise is also expected to enable police to track down and monitor such crimes and reduce the cases in future.
