Rwanda Information & Communication Technology Association – RICTA, which hosts the dot.rw domain for Rwandan websites, is facing a challenge of subscribers refusing to renew their annual services, an official has said.
Yan Kwizera, Operations Officer at RICTA says that now only 195 websites among 1250 with RICTA’s domain names have renewed their subscription to date, and the concerned subscribers have not showed any sign of renewing the services.
Kwizera said that this will lead to the closure of some domain names and these subscribers will end up with losing their domain names or they will be sold to other people who need them.
Payments for domain name renewal started by the end of October 2013 and slated to end by 28th February 2014.
“Those who will fail to pay on time will immediately lose access to their websites’ domain names” Kwizera said.
RICTA’s domain names are .rw, .co.rw, .org.rw, .net.rw, .ac.rw, .coop.rw, and they are sold by people authorized by RICTA management.
Authorized sellers of Rwanda’s domain names are Afriregester Ltd, Broadband systems corporation (BSC), Escia Ltd, Galaxy Group Ltd, Hostholik Ltd, IgiheLtd, Imaginet Ltd, Isap Ltd, Lexsynergy Ltd, Liquid Telecom, Markmonitor Inc, MTN Rwanda, Programage Ltd, and Webspage Ltd.
Webhosting on the national domain of Rwanda (Rw)- the government’s top level domain came after a long battle between Rwanda and its former manager in Belgium- Frederic Gregoire, a Belgian entrepreneur, under his Swiss-based company NIC Congo.
During the domain official handover to Rwanda in May 2013, it was anticipated that webhosting services would be quicker and cheaper for all Rwandan small and medium size business and association.
Following the re-delegation of Rwanda’s Country Code Top Level Domain (ccTLD), RICTA planned on having at least 5000 web domain names registered by 2016, in addition to the already registered about 1800 domain names since 2012 when the Rwanda gained its domain rights.
